500th Race Milestone For Speedway Ace
Mac Campbell posted Thursday February 18, 2010.
When former Shoalhaven speedway driver Brad Bassett straps himself into his Shannon Civil sponsored Falcon speedway sedan on Saturday night what will seem like just a normal heat race to most people in the stands will actually be a rare milestone for the driver many people consider to be speedway’s “Mr Nice Guy”. The 8 lap race will actually be his 500th career race start that started all the way back at Nowra in 1995 when he raced a very competitive Ford Escort when he made the switch to speedway after a successful 8 year road racing career at tracks such as Amaroo & Oran Park.
Bassett has been a one brand man throughout his entire career racing only Fords from the very start progressing from competitive Escorts through to the series of before purchasing his famous XF Falcon which he did over 400 races in up until 6 months ago when he retired the and purchased his current car which is the ex Ray Healey NSW Modified Sedan Series winning BF Falcon.
A small but quality field of Modified Sedans will be trying to stop Bassett’s 500th race being a winning one including best mate and travelling partner Bob Hamilton in his rejuvenated XF Falcon. The 2 have travelled to dozens of meetings over the last few seasons in tandem racking up thousands of kilometre’s travelling the length and breath of the state. Other drivers who hope to spoil the party for Bassett are Wayne Olive in his giant killing Mazda RX7 along with local stars Len Davis, Dave Ford, Sydney star Glen Mitchell and Canberra’s Freddy Murphy with the exception of Olive will all be driving Falcon’s. The lone Holden in the field will be driven by outstanding 16yo Rookie Shane Holbrow who will be having his very first run with the faster Modified Production Sedans after some outstanding races in the Streetstocks earlier in the season. This exciting young prospect has shown some outstanding form and looks to have a long and successful career ahead of him after only having his first race in December 2009 and already has a feature race win under his belt.
Modified Productions are only a small part of what should be an exciting show tomorrow night with round 2 of the Speedquip Cup Series for the popular V8 AMCA Nationals, the NSW Microsprint Title plus Street Stockers and 1600 sedans.
Sprintcar star Troy Little will be a major drawcard when he takes on some of the country’s best drivers from NSW & QLD in the 2009/10 NSW Microsprint Title. Little won the recent Australian Title held at the famous Southern 500 Speedway in Portland Victoria earlier in the year and will be trying to back that up with a state title win on a track that he always performs well. Trying to make sure things don’t go his way will be several big names in Microsprint racing including Little’s brother-in-law Steve Ellicott, Jay “Hollywood” Hall, Rhys Marchant, Mitch Isaacs and Queenslander’s Les Nelson and John Giersbergen who will make the long journey from the sunshine state for the event.
16 of the best AMCA drivers in the state have nominated for the second round of the Speedquip Cup Series including round 1 winner David Robertson in his GRQ Barry Lewis Racewear machine. He will face a barrage of competition from many drivers including two 2 car teams who will be going all out to take the nights feature win. Graham Flood and Luke Warner will be one of the two car teams in their Flood Family Motor Sport entries along with Shannon Civil Racing team mates Russel Bailey and Michael Xuereb in their familiar lime green and white cars.
Street Stockers and 1600 sedans will make up the balance of what should be very entertaining meeting on what should be a super fast tacky track after all the recent rain at the venue over the past 2 weeks.
Gates open at the Albatross Road venue at the usual time of 4pm with the first shot fired in anger on the track from 6pm.
So remember to bring somebody to hold on to for all the action at Nowra’s very own Fire Service Plus Nowra Speedway.
